Sylvanus Gibbs Nye papers, 1828-1873.

Chiefly letters (1845-1851), written by William H. DeWitt, of Albany , N.Y., to Sylvanus G. Nye, describing DeWitt's business activities with Nye in the barrel stave trade, including details on how the staves were first shipped from Michigan and the West via the Erie Canal to Albany, and then down the Hudson River to various whaling ports including Sag Harbor, Nantucket, Fairhaven, and New Bedford; the establishment of the packet trade between Albany and New Bedford and the activities of the schooner Henry Clay in this trade; letters to Nye asking him to aid in the collection of a debt from the owners of the brig Quito of Marion, Mass. Financial records include bills of sale for Nye purchasing shares in the sloop Louisa (1836), and the schooner Tiger (1838); bill of lading (1873), for coal shipped; and bills and receipts (1851), for goods and services.
